Meeting Minutes: 9 Sept, 2002

Hello all,

The first EGSAC meeting of the year was held today from 12-1 in 1017.
About 15 people attended and a great time was had by all. Here's what
transpired:

1) We talked about a change in the regular meeting time. From now on, our
default meeting time will be the first Monday of the month from
11:30-12:30, to better accommodate scheduling conflicts with classes.

2) We talked about a few budget matters, most notably the fact that we are
likely to go over budget on a couple of our upcoming events. We'll plan to
re-assess our budget situation at some point later in the semester.

3) IM Sports - soccer is definitely happening (Jake Gebbie is the captain,
contact him at gebbie@mit.edu if you're psyched to play). Contact the
Sports Czar, Kate Ruhl (kruhl@mit.edu) about other IM sports.

4) EGSAC does have a web page - the URL is http://eaps.mit.edu/egsac/. I
think that Ben Crosby (mountain@mit.edu) is taking over the maintenance of
the web page, so it will probably be updated soon.

5) Upcoming events - many, many exciting things are happening!! Long Pond
is coming up soon, as well as the Run to Stop Global Warming (as Cameron
put it, global warming is going to stop THIS SATURDAY) and the trip to see
Cirque du Soleil. There are still spots open for the run and the Cirque du
Soleil, contact Cameron Wobus (cwobus@mit.edu) about the run and Payal
Parekh (parekh@pimms.mit.edu) about Cirque.

6) Other events that are in the pipeline - a concert at the Isabella Stewart
Gardner museum, possibly December 16. Also, excursions to see the movie
The Core, which comes out in November, and maybe a Monster Truck rally or
WWF event (!!), are in the works. Also, there's a play at the Tremont
Theater (whose name is escaping me at the moment!) that we might get a
group together to go see. So lots of fun things will be happening. Got an
idea for an event? Great! Contact Lindsay (schoenbl@mit.edu) or one of the
other officers for info.

7) Chili Cook-off Peer Hour is coming sometime this fall! Stay tuned for
details.

8) A few EGSAC t-shirts are still available (contact Kate, kruhl@mit.edu)
and the plan is to order more.

9) Finally, we talked about the survey Payal did about ergonomics in
graduate student workspaces in EAPS. Payal received a great response to
the survey with about 25 people responding immediately. Apparently the
problem of poorly configured workspaces and old and uncomfortable
desks/chairs is pretty widespread in EAPS, and some supervisors are more
receptive than others when it comes to complaints and suggestions. Payal
and Kerim are going to put together a detailed proposal to submit to the
powers that be in EAPS that outlines graduate students suggestions for
dealing with this. For more info or to help out, contact Payal
(parekh@pimms.mit.edu). In the meantime, MIT has some resources about
workplace ergonomics (web.mit.edu/environment/programs/ergonimics.html),
including some nifty computer programs that remind you to take a break and
stretch once in awhile.

That's about all for this month. The next meeting should take place on
October 7 at 11:30 AM (we'll send out an email reminder). We encourage you
to come to the meetings, and as always any comments/feedback/suggestions
are welcome!

Cheers,
Maureen
EGSAC secretary
