Meeting Minutes: 01 December, 2003

EGSAC met this afternoon in 54-517; following are the minutes.

1.  The cabin used for the Long Pond retreat is being reserved for
weekends in fall 2004.  We'll reserve it soon, after checking for a good
weekend that won't conflict with the PAOC retreat.

2.  Vicki McKenna is receptive to having students play a large role in the
department's new student orientation.  An organizing committee will be
formed at the start of the spring semester.

3.  The Education Office is introducing new TA evaluation forms.  Vicki
will keep these on file so that graduating students applying to teaching
positions can use their rave reviews to strengthen their teaching
portfolios.

4.  Vicki is planning to conduct workshops on how to write a CV, research
statement, and teaching portfolio writing.  These are likely to be held in
the spring, and details will be forthcoming.

5.  Plans are underway for an EAPS ski trip, likely to be in February.

6.  There are openings in the Department Lecture Series calendar, and
Cameron welcomes input.  See his e-mail that was just sent for further
details.

7.  Graduate students in the Physics Department have written a petition to
MIT's administration requesting help with the rapidly rising health care
premiums.  Maureen Long is going to send an e-mail with more information
and a link to the petition later this week.  The organizers hope to get
3,000 students to sign it, so please take a moment to read and consider
it.

8.  Since January is IAP, we'll hold our next meeting on the first Monday
of February 2004.

Sincerely,
Rob
