SUMMARY:[PAOCQ] Hilary Palevsky (BC)
DESCRIPTION:“Interconnected biological and physical controls on the ocean’s biological carbon pump”\nPhotosynthetic fixation of organic carbon and export of a fraction of that carbon from the surface to the deep ocean – the biological pump – plays a key role in enabling the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However\, in regions that experience deep winter mixing\, much of the organic carbon exported from the seasonally-stratified surface ocean is subsequently respired within the thermocline and ventilated back to the atmosphere during winter rather than being sequestered on annual or longer time scales. In this talk\, I will show how physical and biogeochemical sensors deployed on moorings and gliders at the Ocean Observatories Initiative’s Irminger Sea Array since 2014 provide insights into these complex dynamics. This site features some of the deepest winter convection found anywhere in the global ocean\, with maximum annual winter mixing ranging from 400-1400m. This deep winter mixing both reduces carbon sequestration at depth by ventilating 65-100% of the carbon respired within the seasonal thermocline\, but also promotes carbon flux to depth by small particles that are detrained when the mixed layer shoals in spring. In addition to the small particle carbon pool transported to depth by mixing\, sub-daily optical backscatter profiles show annual pulses of large fast-sinking particles that penetrate to below 2000m\, driving additional carbon sequestration. I will discuss the implications of this work for our understanding of the biological pump’s role in driving ocean carbon uptake\, as well as the role of sustained time-series observations in advancing our understanding of ocean carbon cycling. \n\nPAOC Colloquium — \n\nInterdisciplinary seminar series that brings together the whole PAOC (Program in Atmospheres\, Oceans\, and Climate) community. SUMMARY:[ESS] Pascal Audet (U Ottawa)
DESCRIPTION:“Deep Roots of a Mountain Belt: Lithospheric Structure and Mantle Dynamics Beneath the Canadian Cordillera”\nThe Canadian Cordillera\, a vast Phanerozoic mountain belt from the US border to Alaska\, is classically attributed to terrane accretion\, subduction\, and strike-slip tectonics\, but its deep architecture and the geodynamics of the northern Canadian Cordillera (NCC) have been unclear\, fueling controversial models of its amalgamation and current tectonic deformation. New seismic data from the EarthScope USArray and other recent networks across Alaska and Yukon provide new constraints on its architecture and tectonic processes: the orogen is characterized by a shallow\, flat Moho\, with temperatures of ~800–900°C\, which can support high topography without a conventional crustal root. Rigid lithospheric elements—the buried Mackenzie craton and the Liard Transfer Zone—act as buttresses that localize deformation and shape the arcuate deformation front. The Tintina Fault\, a large-scale transcurrent fault\, cuts through the full lithospheric mantle\, displacing cratonic fragments. Furthermore\, depressions of the 410 and 660 km discontinuities beneath a slab window created by subduction of the Resurrection/Farallon spreading ridge suggest mantle transition-zone temperatures are 100–300 K higher than in the surrounding mantle. Overall\, a fossil divergent plate boundary provides a long-lived conduit for deep-mantle heat\, linking whole-mantle convection to a hot\, weak lithosphere and promoting long-term uplift of the Cordillera. \n\nEarth Science Seminar — \n\nLecture portion of the EAPS graduate-level class 12.571\, covering current research in geophysics\, geology\, geochemistry\, and geobiology. All members of the MIT community are welcome to join for presentations by guest speakers\, held approximately every two weeks during the term. \n\nContact: earth-science-seminar-info@mit.edu earth-science-seminar-info@mit.edu \n\nAttend Virtually: \nhttps://mit.zoom.us/j/94298370383 \n\nEAPS Calendar Detail Page: \nhttps://eaps.mit.edu/events/ess-pascal-audet-u-ottawa/

SUMMARY:[DLS] Laurie Barge (NASA)
DESCRIPTION:Searching for Signs of Life and its Origin on Other Planets\nIs there life elsewhere in the solar system\, and if so\, how can we find it? Although Earth provides a variety of examples of what biology can look like\, examples of the critical steps between abiotic and biotic systems are lacking because the prevalence of life on our planet has erased its record of prebiotic conditions. The distinction between biotic and abiotic is still often unclear in astrobiology\, partly because the environment drives formation of non-random organic distributions throughout a planet’s organic chemical evolution. Prebiotic chemistry may still be a current or formerly active process on other worlds with detected chemical gradients and organics\, for example on ocean worlds such as Enceladus or in the subsurface of Mars. In this talk\, I will discuss our group’s work on simulating prebiotic hydrothermal systems where environmental conditions control the abiotic organic distributions produced. By bridging the gap between geochemistry and biochemistry\, we aim to establish planet-specific biosignature thresholds to aid the search for life and its origin on other planets. \n\nEAPS Department Lecture Series — \n\nWeekly talks aimed to bring together the entire EAPS community\, given by leading thinkers in the areas of geology\, geophysics\, geobiology\, geochemistry\, atmospheric science\, oceanography\, climatology\, and planetary science. SUMMARY:[Special PLS] Robb Calder (University of Cambridge)
DESCRIPTION:“Most Rocky Sub-Neptunes are Molten: Mapping the Solidification Shoreline for Gas Dwarf Exoplanets”\nSub-Neptunes are the most common type of detected exoplanet\, yet their observed masses and radii are degenerate with several interior structures. One possibility is that sub-Neptunes have silicate/iron interiors and H2-dominated atmospheres (𝜇3.8 g mol−1) and are thus outside the scope of this study. Therefore\, most detected sub-Neptunes\, if they are gas dwarfs\, have permanent magma oceans. This result motivates further research into the interactions between molten interiors and overlying atmospheres\, and campaigns to identify unambiguous signatures of these interactions. \n\nPlanetary Lunch Seminar — \n\nColloquia topics span the range of research interests of the department’s planetary sciences research program\, and the talks are intended to appeal to any graduate students\, postdocs\, research scientists\, and faculty with a background in planetary science. Speakers include members of the MIT community and visitors. \n\nContact: planetary-org@mit.edu planetary-org@mit.edu \n\nEAPS Calendar Detail Page: \nhttps://eaps.mit.edu/events/special-pls-robb-calder-university-of-cambridge/
