SUMMARY:Cambridge Science Festival - Ocean Chemistry Virtual Reality Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Become a “GEOTRACES scientist for a day” including shipboard interviews with scientists\, 360° videos\, short games\, and other material suitable for the general public. \n\nWe will present a 3D Virtual Reality (Meta Quest 2) simulation of a real-life chemical oceanography scientific research cruise from Tahiti to Chile on the Research Vessel Roger Revelle! The VR modules were created by Chrissy Wiederwohl (Texas A&M University) and a graduate student while working aboard the original 2018 sampling cruise. \n\nThis material is also available to showcase at K-12 schools\, libraries/museums\, and festivals and adult services centers. \n\n\nABOUT THE ORGANIZER \n\nEd Boyle https://eaps.mit.edu/people/faculty/edward-a-boyle/ is an MIT Professor of Marine Geochemistry of 47 years who has been involved in the International GEOTRACES project for the past two decades. GEOTRACES determines ocean distributions of trace elements and their isotopes that play key roles in phytoplankton nutrition\, and serve as tracers of ocean circulation\, indicators of anthropogenic pollution\, and tools to study past ocean climates. Boyle’s research is focused on transport of anthropogenic lead through the ocean using its isotope ratios as indicators of sources. He also studies other chemical elements in the oceans and has used fossil shells from oceanic sediments to study ice age oceanography. \n\nEAPS Calendar Detail Page: \nhttps://eaps.mit.edu/events/cambridge-science-festival-ocean-chemistry-virtual-reality-cruise/

SUMMARY:Cambridge Science Festival - LINK 12 Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Come learn how to organize a visit by scientists in MIT’s Department of Earth\, Atmospheric\, and Planetary Sciences to your K-12 classroom! Simple demonstrations can communicate complex scientific concepts. Our continually expanding collection of demos include “weather in a tank”\, “ocean acidification in a cup”\, and “Earthquake on a table.” \n\nAbout the Organizer \n\nLINK12 https://eaps.mit.edu/community/outreach/link-12/ connects scientists in MIT’s Department of Earth\, Atmospheric\, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) with K-12 educators throughout the Greater Boston area. Scientists visit classrooms to present interactive science demonstrations that are tailored to be relevant to ongoing course work in classes. Connecting with local schools allows our scientists to develop scientific communication skills for broad audiences and offers an opportunity to give back to local communities. With these goals in mind and through support from MIT grants\, we are able to offer our services to schools free of charge. Please visit our page to learn more and submit an interest form! \n\nEAPS Calendar Detail Page: \nhttps://eaps.mit.edu/events/cambridge-science-festival-link-12-outreach/

SUMMARY:Cambridge Science Festival - Meteorites\, magnets\, and space exploration
DESCRIPTION:Spot the difference between a space rock and an Earth rock\, hold a piece of solar system history\, and learn about the ongoing exploration of outer space. \n\nAbout the Organizer \n\nThe MIT Planetary Magnetism https://www.benweiss.mit.edu/ lab investigates the formation\, evolution\, and history of planetary bodies with a focus on paleomagnetism\, geophysics\, meteoritics\, and habitability. \n\nEAPS Calendar Detail Page: \nhttps://eaps.mit.edu/events/cambridge-science-festival-meteorites-magnets-and-space-exploration/
