The loss of mountain glaciers globally are contributing to sea-level rise, altering water resources, and affecting cultures and tourism around the world. Recent glacier mass loss projections for various climate change scenarios stress the urgency of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming and reduce these negative impacts. At the same time, some amount of glacier loss is unfortunately inevitable, and all communities ranging from the high-mountains to the coast must therefore begin developing and implementing adaptation strategies to be prepared. Here we will discuss the latest global glacier projections and how they are being used to support mitigation and adaptation efforts by international policymakers and local communities.
Earth Science Seminar —
Lecture portion of the EAPS graduate-level class 12.571, covering current research in geophysics, geology, geochemistry, and geobiology. All members of the MIT community are welcome to join for presentations by guest speakers, held approximately every two weeks during the term.
