LINK-12
Let’s Invest in K-12
Mission
EAPS LINK-12 fosters connections between scientists from MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary (EAPS) and schools and educational programs in the Boston area. Our scientists apply math, biology, chemistry, and physics to study the natural world, from the rocks beneath our feet, to the Earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and climate; from distant planets to the origins of life on Earth and beyond.
When a scientist from EAPS visits a classroom, they will share their experience, as well as their unique background and path into science. We promote educational interactions that are meaningful, relevant, and respectful, with the intent of creating long-term collaborations. We’ll share our knowledge, as well as stories of our inspiration, our successes, and our struggles. Our program is designed to fuel students’ natural curiosity, igniting an interest in scientific discovery and STEM careers.
Who can participate
Educators from K-12 programs in the Boston area and EAPS scientists interested in fostering student engagement with science and STEM fields. Our scientist-volunteers can cover all grade level science subjects including math, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics. We especially encourage participation from the Boston Public School system and metro area Title 1 schools.
What to expect
After you are matched, teachers and EAPS scientist-volunteers will schedule a meeting to plan a visit and align on goals and expectations for the material presented. Visits will last ~30–60 minutes depending on grade level and the class schedule. EAPS scientist-volunteers will prepare a short demonstration and/or presentation that exhibits an aspect of their research, discuss what it is like to be a scientist, and field questions from the class about both science and scientific career paths. For the 2021-22 academic year, all visits will be virtual.
To connect and learn more:

Protection of minors
LINK-12 operates in accordance with MIT’s policies and best practices regarding interactions with minors. EAPS scientist-volunteers will be required to pass a criminal background check if they intend to meet in-person more than twice with the same classroom of students. Communication about the program, classroom visits, and visit follow-up is relegated solely to EAPS scientist-volunteers and teachers; EAPS scientist-volunteers may not contact students directly.
