Past perturbations to the global energy budget: perspectives from air bubbles in ice”

Ocean heat uptake plays a crucial role in our planet’s response to human-induced changes to the energy budget. Although the paleo record doesn’t offer a perfect analog for modern global warming, understanding how the ocean absorbed and released heat in response to past perturbations can yield valuable insight into this key component of the climate system. Here, we will use mean ocean temperature reconstructions from ice core noble gases to provide quantitative constraints on the past state of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere, and the global radiative budget.

Earth Science Seminar

Lecture portion of the EAPS graduate-level class 12.571, covering current research in geophysics, geology, geochemistry, and geobiology. All members of the MIT community are welcome to join for presentations by guest speakers, held approximately every two weeks during the term.
