“Bridging Heliophysics and Planetary Science: Insights from the Solar System to Exoplanetary Worlds”

Heliophysics is a rapidly expanding field that intersects solar and stellar physics, planetary science, and geophysics. Understanding how the Sun interacts with planetary environments is crucial for advancing our knowledge of both the solar system and exoplanetary systems. I will compare the interactions of the Sun with Mercury, a magnetized planet, and Mars, a weakly magnetized one, to illustrate the diverse effects of solar radiation and space weather. Given the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of heliophysics, I will also explore its broader implications, including its role in shaping exoplanetary atmospheres, influencing habitability, and driving planetary surface processes.

Planetary Lunch Seminar —

Colloquia topics span the range of research interests of the department’s planetary sciences research program, and the talks are intended to appeal to any graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, and faculty with a background in planetary science. Speakers include members of the MIT community and visitors.
