What would happen if the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) collapses? How likely is it?

Categories: Climate, Faculty

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, plays a critical role in exchanging warm and cold water throughout the Atlantic Ocean. This circulation influences global heat transfer as well as weather events around the world. Thanks to warmer oceans, sea level rise, and increasing rainfall, the AMOC is changing. What does that mean today? EAPS Professor Raffael Ferrari answers these questions and more for MIT Climate.
