Biogeochemist studying the marine plankton ecosystem using numerical simulations and ecological theory.

Research Interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of the marine ecosystem and the physical and biogeochemical environment. I examine how physics and chemistry of the ocean determines phytoplankton biogeography, and how in turn those organisms affect their environment. I am particularly interested in how the interactions of these components of the earth system will change in a warming world. To advance this research I am involved in developing and using complex numerical models and simple theoretical frameworks, guided by laboratory, field and satellite observations.

Topics I investigate:

  • Plankton Ecology
  • Biodiversity
  • Bio-physical interactions

Stephanie Dutkiewicz has a BSc, Physics from the University of Miami and a PhD in Oceanography from the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. After three years of postdoctoral training at MIT, she joined the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences as a research scientist in 2002. In addition to serving as co-investigator on several NASA Ocean Biology & Biogeochemistry projects, Stephanie is affiliated with the multi-institution Simons Collaboration on Computational Biogeochemical Modeling of Marine Ecosystems (CBIOMES), the MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy (CS3), and the MIT Darwin Project, which brings together ocean science fields to model marine microbes and their communities.
