Kristin Bergmann receives Earll M. Murman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising

Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) Professor Kristin Bergmann has been awarded the Earll M. Murman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising. Given by MIT’s Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC), this award is presented to a faculty member who has served as an excellent advisor and mentor for undergraduates and has had a significant impact on their student’s lives and academic success.

“I could not have asked for a more incredible undergraduate advisor,” says EAPS graduate student Becca Mastrola ’24, who nominated Bergmann for the award. “Kristin constantly went above and beyond; she cared deeply about me as a person, inspired me to pursue my interests, and, most importantly, always believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.”

Bergmann’s research reconstructs the record of environmental changes of the early Earth using a combination of sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and geobiology. With a focus on marine carbonate sedimentary rocks and fossils, she and her team analyze samples collected from around the world to understand how the chemistry and climate of the oceans and atmosphere affected the evolution of complex life. Her dedication to students and public service was previously recognized with the Paul Gray Faculty Award for Public Service.

The UAC honored the 2026 award recipients at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 5. The award is named for MIT Professor Earll M. Murman SB ’63, SM ’65, PhD ’67 who served as the director of Project Athena (1988-1991), head of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (1991-1996), and the director of the Lean Aerospace Initiative (1995-2002).
